Four Generations of the Accurate Box Company

BUILDING OUTSIDE THE BOX

A leader in high-graphic corrugated packaging, Accurate Box is redefining success in the manufacturing sector by investing in sustainability and people.

Consumers are always eager to open the box and get to the goods inside. Yet, were it not for the packaging, they’d be empty-handed.

New Jersey-based Accurate Box Company, Inc. manufactures that essential layer of packaging for some of the most recognized brands in the world. With 76 years and four generations of family leadership to its name, it’s one of the largest independent litho-laminate manufacturers in the U.S., renowned for printing vibrant graphics on incredibly durable packaging.

Production is not the only area where Accurate sets a high bar. The company’s commitment to sustainability and people-first philosophy make it a paragon of excellence in American manufacturing—a status Accurate president and CEO Lisa Hirsh intends to maintain.

“We’ve expanded and invested in the production process considerably in order to achieve our most important goal, which is to take care of customers so they can succeed,” she says.

INVESTING IN TECH AND PEOPLE

Accurate’s story is both classically American and decidedly futuristic. Founded in 1944 by Henry Hirsh, the company grew from a small folding carton company to a leading manufacturer of high-graphic corrugated packaging and lithography.

Under Lisa’s leadership, Accurate acquired cutting-edge technology that has allowed it to be competitive with larger companies in the industry. “Succeeding in this space means focusing on our niche and investing in state-of-the-art equipment that allows us to be more efficient,” Lisa says. At Accurate’s new 400,000-square-foot facility in Paterson, New Jersey, high-efficiency presses print seven colors plus a UV coating in a single pass on both small and large runs, while state-of-the-art cutters produce precise, resilient boxes that boast a 99.95% customer acceptance rate.

Reinforcing efficiency and productivity at Accurate is a slate of ambitious sustainability efforts. Solar panels on the facility’s roof provide 20% of Accurate’s power needs, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. The materials used in production are 100% recyclable, with leftover scraps processed for recycling. Transportation needs, too, trend low, due to Accurate’s ability to manage every stage of production in-house, further reducing the company’s total carbon emissions.

Masters of their niche, Accurate is embracing new opportunities in e-commerce, quick-serve restaurants (fast food), and other markets that demand readily available, U.S.-made packaging. “Today, the experience of what you purchase and how it arrives is becoming more important to the American public,” says Mark Schlossman, executive vice president of sales and marketing. Accurate’s reputation as a flexible and responsive vendor makes it well positioned to help current and future customers navigate these promising new markets. “We spend a lot of time servicing our customers,” says Lisa. “You tell us what you need, and we will make that happen.”

That people-first philosophy resonates within its corporate culture. Accurate has over 300 employees, more than 50% of whom live locally, infusing the Paterson community with well-paying jobs and economic benefits. It was even named a top workplace in New Jersey by The Star-Ledger, based on employee responses—further proof that what’s inside the box is as important as the packaging.
